If you are lucky to live near several maternity hospitals in France, you may be wondering which one is the best.
There are three levels of maternity hospitals in France, creatively named level 1, level 2, and level 3. Most pregnancies can go to a level 1 and 2 hospital, however, high risk pregnancies must go to a level 3. Talk to your doctor or midwife about which level hospital you should register. The level of hospital does not determine the level of care.
The best source I can find for reviews and rankings of maternity hospitals is at maman.fr. The website is entirely in French, however, it is not difficult to navigiate.
1. Go to http://www.maman.fr/top_des_maternites-1-1.html
2. Find “le top de votre département” and select your region.
3. Click on the name of a hospital to get detailed information about its ranking and read reviews.
One important thing when going through this list is to look at the nombre de votants, which is the number of people that filled out the ratings. Take ratings lightly for maternities with less than 10 reviewers.
Read the derniers commentaires des mamans to see why or why not they ranked the maternity low. I found someone ranking a maternity low because she did not like the lighting in the room.
