If you are planning on giving birth while in France, you will need to prepare a bag in advance of things you will need at the hospital.
In the US it is commonly referred to as an overnight bag, however, most women in France tend to stay between 4 to 7 days – so here it is more of a “long-stay bag.” If you have complications, you may stay longer.
I received this list of items from the Bayeux Maternité. Each hospital may have different requirements so be sure to confirm with your hospital to make sure you have all what you will need. Thankfully, I have most of the items on the list already.
List of What to Bring to the Hospital When Giving Birth in France
For Baby…
5 Short- or long- sleeved onesies;
2 Shirts;
5 Pajamas;
Blanket;
Socks;
Warm hat;
Electronic rectal thermometer.
For Mamma…
Nightgown;
Bath robe;
Slippers;
Nursing bra;
Bathroom toiletries;
Hand towels;
Wash cloths;
Throw-away underwear;
Outfit for leaving;
Pen.
Also Need…
Family book (Livret de famille);
Blood type card for mamma;
Carte Vitale;
Laboratory and exam results from throughout pregnancy;
Folder with ultrasounds.
I thought it was funny that they ask us to bring a pen. The midwife said it is for paperwork that I will be filling out after our baby is born. I guess they are tired of everyone running off with their pens. Since I will be there for a few days, I will definitely have to add my Amazon Kindle to the list! I am sure to get lots of reading done there. Maybe even bring some yarn to crochet. I am not used to being idle for long!
